This year, Yellowstone Safari Company will host a special American Prairie Safari in cooperation with the American Prairie Foundation on September 22-26, 2011. Participants will be provided with a full-service experience that combines natural history, wildlife viewing, cultural studies and recreational activities into an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
This five-day safari begins in historic Great Falls and Fort Benton, MT where you'll visit Lewis and Clark sites and learn about their journey. You'll also have an opportunity to float a section of the Missouri River.
The group will then travel to the American Prairie Reserve, where you'll stay in a beautiful renovated lodge and enjoy delicious meals. You'll explore the Reserve with a wildlife biologist guide and see bison, many species of grasslands birds, shore birds and raptors, as well as pronghorn, prairie dog colonies and deer. Hike the Missouri River breaks where you could spot bighorn sheep. Along the way you'll discover historic sites such as teepee rings, a buffalo jump, medicine rock, one-room schoolhouse and old homesteads.
The highlight of the trip will be a visit to the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge to witness one of the largest gathering of elk in the West. Up to 500 elk congregate for their spectacular mating ritual. Rutting males "bugle" and gather females into harems, all the while battling each other for mating rites.
